“Journaling is like whispering to one’s self and listening at the same time.” - Mina Murray

The benefits of journaling can be seen in various aspects of your life. It’s a time to release, to express, to explore, to cry out for help.  It’s an avenue you can use to feel every feeling possible in a healthy and constructive manner. Whether you are 13, 33, or 63, there is power in incorporating journaling into your daily routine.

Acknowledge Your Emotions

Emotional health is one of the keys to living a healthy and happy life.  One thing in life that’s guaranteed is you will experience emotional highs and lows.  Some days might be very positive with life-altering experiences that rock your world in the best way.  Other days you might be dealt blow after blow that makes you question whether you can make it through to see another sunrise.

No matter the emotions that come your way, journaling is a tool to use, allowing you to acknowledge your feelings and work through them.  Even if you express your true feelings to no one but yourself and your journal, you are releasing your feelings into the universe instead of leaving them bottled up inside.

It’s when you let your emotions stay pent up that you start to experience a negative impact on your physical and emotional health.

NOURISH TIP #1: Never be afraid to bare it all in your journal.  If you are hesitant that your thoughts might be read by someone else, consider placing it in a lock box or journaling online using a password protected document.  Holding back your true feelings while journaling can limit the benefits you receive.

Manifest Your Goals Through Journaling

In your journal, you can tell your truth.

  • The thoughts you are hesitant to mention to those in your life.

  • The dreams you are reluctant to say out loud.

  • The goals that sound too unrealistic to achieve.

Your journal knows it all if you’re open and honest. You can use your journal to write out your goals and the vision you have for your life.

A Forbes article on the connection between neuroscience and writing down your goals stated: “People who vividly describe their goals are 1.2-1.4 times more likely to successfully accomplish their goals!”

When you get in the habit of writing your goals and even keeping track of your progress via your journal, you have developed a personal accountability partner in yourself.

NOURISH TIP #2: Choose one goal to focus on for the week, month, quarter, or year.  Write that goal down every day during that period.  The daily reminder of what you’re working towards achieving allows for a connection that can help you turn the dream to reality.

Start Your Day Right

Every day is a blessing and a gift.  Remind yourself of the treasure you have by starting your day with journaling.  This daily ritual starts your day off right because you’re focusing on yourself first.  Too often we reach for our cell phone or laptop before dedicating even 5 minutes to what’s going on internally.

Even if you have to wake up 30 minutes earlier to develop a positive morning routine that focuses on you first, it’s well worth it.  Start the day by acknowledging your thoughts and your feelings. Doing so gives you time to work through your thoughts and emotions while reminding yourself of your goals before your feet even hit the floor.

NOURISH TIP #3: Develop a full morning routine surrounding your journaling.  Maybe you read the bible or a few pages from a motivational book of your choice.  You might brew your favorite organic tea or complete a short yoga routine to relax your body.  The choice is yours, and the options are endless based on your preferences and needs.
