HERStory | Meet the Artisan Samata
What made you start your business?
That feeling that many women had, of never quite being enough. It started when I read the 2016 Women Under Pressure White Paper (which surveyed 6,000 women), and the core findings showed that women are under more pressure than ever before and have fewer outlets to release tension through. We also see fewer positive messages of encouragement.
I had just delivered two Oscars gowns for our project Red Carpet Green Dress and was exhausted but so proud of what we had achieved. And the first question I was asked was “What’s next?” For me, it was about putting a pin in that conversation and instead centering the conversion on what was now. THE TRIBE™ is a global community, a diverse representation of ages, ethnicities and industries – including science, art, fashion, business and activism.
What is the inspiration behind your brand’s products?
Mindset building. Where your mind goes, the day follows. I created the THE TRIBE™ Empowerment Journal to help women get their minds right. It is a 432 page bag-sized uplifting and unloading space, full of thought-provoking self-care content. I wanted to include what I call celebration spaces - places to write positive things about themselves - focus on what their intentions are for the day. But it is also a guided journal with questions, quotes and mind-maps, and of course room for reflections and ideas too. It was important to me that it was designed in a way that didn’t leave the person using it laden you with guilt if they missed a day, so you fill in the dates as you go along. You can start in December or April or whenever suits you.
What’s ahead for THE TRIBE?
I will always strive to create products and experiences which empower women. Particularly, I wanted to keep making celebration spaces. Where we can share what we recognize about ourselves today outside of what might define us tomorrow.
