What made you start your business?
In 2014 I went through a divorce and was also hit with the reality that I may never have children. I was devastated to say the least, but it was truly a low point in my life where I began to question everything that I had known to be true. I needed a healthy distraction and to take care of myself mentally and emotionally. So one day I Googled candle making kits and started watching a lot of YouTube videos.

What is the inspiration behind your brand’s products?
Intentional Self-Care! My self-care has always played a huge role in my restoration and healing throughout life’s ups and downs. More specifically, aromatherapy has been something I’ve used to help uplift my mood or to help relax me. Therefore when creating my products, I wanted the aromas and scent names to either represent or evoke a self-care mood or action. I want to inspire consumers to shop with intention and select the aroma that speaks to them in that moment.

What’s ahead for Soyful Aromas?
Full transparency, I’m not sure what’s ahead for Soy Aromas because I never thought it would last this long. I officially started Soyful Aromas in 2015 and again it was about my self-care and healing. I never set out to start a business and struggled (still do sometimes) with charging for what I feel I’ve been gifted to do. I still get excited about each and every order, share, support, and compliment. It still feels surreal. Don’t get me wrong this has been hard work running a small business, but I also work a full time job that I love, and I care for my aging mother full time. Right now I’m a one-woman-show from beginning to end so I’m keeping Soyful Aromas options open. That may sound irresponsible of me as a small business owner that I don’t have this grand plan, but right now I’m in a place where I'll keep going as long as Soyful Aromas is benefiting others by encouraging and inspiring their self-care.

More about Janet | Can you relate?

Favorite day of the week & Why?
Sunday because it’s a day of peace and perfect to do absolute nothing.

Climb a mountain or jump from a plane?
Climb a mountain with a lot of rest breaks to take it all in as well as to catch my breath LOL!

Greatest accomplishment.
Arranging for my mom and her best friend to travel to Michigan a few years back so that my mom could see her eldest sister and other siblings. They hadn’t seen each other in about 20 years. It was a well overdue family reunion that brought my mother unspeakable joy.

Favorite movie?
Brown Sugar. I’m such a hopeless romantic.
